Dishwasher Won't Start? 8 Things to Check First
No lights, no beeps, no response — or it worked yesterday and today it's a very expensive cabinet. Before you call, run these checks. Half of "won't start" calls are something simple. The other half need a tech: A One Dishwasher Repair WA, (253) 549-3002, same-day across Washington.
Check the breaker — dishwashers trip breakers more than you'd think, especially after a power flicker. Also check the GFCI outlet if your dishwasher plugs in under the sink (some do). No power = no lights, obviously.

1. Is It Getting Power?
2. The Door Isn't Latching
The #1 mechanical cause. Push the door firmly — you should hear/feel a solid click. If the latch is worn, the door looks closed but the switch never engages. Try pressing firmly on the top corners while starting a cycle. If it starts, it's the latch assembly.
3. Control Lock / Child Lock Is On
Many models (especially Samsung, LG, Whirlpool) have a control lock — hold a button 3 seconds to toggle. If the panel is lit but nothing responds, this is probably it. Check your manual for your brand's lock button.
4. Delay Start Got Activated
Someone leaned on the panel and set a 4-hour delay. The display shows a countdown, not an error. Cancel it per your manual.
5. Try a Hard Reset
Turn off the breaker for 5 full minutes, then back on. This clears electronic glitches on all brands — Samsung blinking lights, LG frozen panels, Bosch stuck cycles. If it works after reset but the problem returns, the underlying part is failing. See our brand-by-brand reset guide for exact steps.
6. Thermal Fuse Blown
The thermal fuse kills power to protect the unit from overheating. It blows from a failing heating element or poor ventilation. A blown fuse = dead dishwasher, and it needs a tech to replace it and find why it blew.
7. Door Switch / Interlock Failure
Even with a good latch, the electrical door switch inside can fail. Symptoms: everything looks fine, door clicks shut, but start does nothing. Multimeter diagnosis — tech territory.
8. Control Board Dead
If there's power at the outlet, the latch is fine, reset does nothing, and the panel is dark — it's the main control board. We test boards before replacing them, because they're the most expensive single part.
Checked all 8 and still dead? That's a same-day fix for us: (253) 549-3002. $89 diagnostic, waived with repair.

Won't-Start FAQs
Why did my dishwasher suddenly stop working?
Most common: tripped breaker, worn door latch, or blown thermal fuse — in that order.
Can a power surge kill a dishwasher?
Yes — control boards are sensitive. If yours died after an outage, the board is the prime suspect.
