How to Clean Your Dishwasher Filter (5-Minute Guide)
The filter is the most neglected part of your dishwasher — and the cause of most "not cleaning" and "not draining" complaints. Cleaning it takes 5 minutes and requires zero tools. Here's how, for every major brand. Want A One Dishwasher Repair WA to handle the full tune-up instead? (253) 549-3002 — annual maintenance across Washington.
1. Empty the bottom rack. You need clear access to the tub floor.

2. Find the filter. It's the cylindrical assembly in the center (or rear corner on some GE/Hotpoint models) of the tub floor. On Bosch: twist the center cylinder counterclockwise. On Whirlpool/Maytag/KitchenAid: lift the lower spray arm slightly, then twist the filter counterclockwise. On Samsung/LG: twist the round filter cap.
3. Lift it out. Most assemblies come out in 1–3 pieces: coarse filter, fine filter, sometimes a microfilter. Note the order for reassembly (phone photo helps).
4. Scrub it. Hot water + dish soap + an old toothbrush or soft brush. Get into the mesh. If there's greasy buildup that won't budge, soak 10 minutes in hot water with 1 cup of white vinegar.
5. Clean the sump area. With the filter out, wipe the sump basin underneath with a damp cloth — remove any glass shards (carefully!) or food chunks sitting there.
6. Reinstall in reverse order. Make sure it locks/twists fully into place. A loose filter lets debris straight into the pump — the exact thing you're preventing.
7. Run a test. Empty quick cycle. Done.
How Often?
Monthly. Every month, no exceptions — more often if you don't scrape plates well or have a big household. Set a phone reminder. This single habit prevents more service calls than anything else you can do.
While You're Down There
- Check the spray arms — spin them; clear clogged holes with a toothpick
- Wipe the door gasket — the folds collect black gunk
- Look at the heating element — heavy white scale means it's time for a descale cycle
When Filter Cleaning Isn't Enough
If dishes are still dirty or water still stands after a clean filter, the problem is downstream: clogged spray arms, a weak wash pump, or a failing drain pump. That's a tech job — same-day across Washington: (253) 549-3002. Or book our annual tune-up and never think about the filter again.

Dishwasher Filter FAQs
Where is the dishwasher filter located?
Tub floor, center or rear — a twist-out cylindrical assembly under the bottom rack. All major brands put it there.
Can I put the filter in the dishwasher to clean it?
Funny, but no — hand-wash it. The dishwasher can't clean its own filter effectively.
My filter is damaged/torn — can it be replaced?
Yes, filters are inexpensive parts. Running with a torn filter destroys pumps, so replace it promptly — we stock them.
A dirty filter is behind most dishes not getting clean and dishwasher not draining complaints — start here before anything else.
