Dishwasher Leaking From the Door or Underneath? Here's Why
A dishwasher leak is never "just a little water." Water destroys cabinet floors, subflooring, and baseboards quietly — by the time you see damage, it's been leaking for weeks. Find the source using this guide, then decide: DIY or pro. Leaks are our #2 emergency call at A One Dishwasher Repair WA: (253) 549-3002.
Worn door gasket. Run your finger along the rubber seal. If it's cracked, flattened, or pulling away, water escapes during the wash cycle. Gaskets dry out after 5–7 years — replacement is quick and inexpensive.

Leak From the Front Door
Overloaded / wrong detergent. Too many dishes against the door, or regular dish soap instead of dishwasher detergent (it foams like crazy), forces water past even a good seal. Yes, people really do this.
Unlevel dishwasher. If the unit tilts forward even slightly, water pools at the door. A proper install is level front-to-back and side-to-side. See our dishwasher installation service if yours was never set up right.
Leak From Underneath
Inlet valve failure. The valve that lets water in can crack or stick open — water flows even when the unit is off. If you find water under a dishwasher that hasn't run, suspect the inlet valve. Turn off the supply valve under the sink NOW.
Float switch stuck. The float tells the dishwasher when to stop filling. If it sticks, the tub overfills and water pours out the bottom.
Drain hose split. Age and heat make hoses brittle. A split hose leaks only during drain — easy to miss, easy to fix.
Sump/pump seal. The seal around the pump assembly weeps with age. This one needs a tech — the unit has to come out.
What To Do Right Now
- Stop using the dishwasher.
- Turn off the water supply valve under the sink.
- Soak up standing water — check under and behind the unit.
- Don't run it "just once more" to see. Call (253) 549-3002 — leak diagnosis is same-day anywhere in Washington, $89 waived with repair.

Leaking Dishwasher FAQs
Is a leaking dishwasher dangerous?
To your home, yes — water damage and mold. To you, only if water reaches electrical components. Stop using it and get it checked.
Can a leaking dishwasher be repaired, or do I need a new one?
Almost always repairable — gaskets, valves, hoses, and seals are all standard parts. We only recommend replacement if the tub itself is cracked. Read our repair vs. replace guide for the full decision framework.
